How the performance of laboratories be monitored after getting FSSAI recognition and notification?

FSSAI has an intensive online portal for monitoring the laboratory details and the samples tested by them, called as INFoLNET (Indian Food Laboratory Network). Also, since FSSAI notification is based on the NABL accreditation which ensures reliable testing of food products.

Can I get my food analysed myself?

It is informed that as Consumers are major stakeholder in the food chain; accordingly consumers are empowered under Section 40 of FSS Act, 2006 and2.4.4 of FSS Rules, 2011 to have the food analysed and if the report of the Food Analyst shows that the article of food is not in compliance with the Act or the rules or regulations made thereunder, the consumer shall be entitled to get refund of the fees paid by him under this section.

FoSCoRIS means Food Safety Compliance with Regular Inspection and Sampling. It is a web based software application which does the process of inspection of Samples and generate its report based on certain criteria.

What is Food Safety and Standards (Food Safety Auditing), Regulations?

To strengthen the food safety surveillance system, FSSAI has envisaged audits of Food Business Operators through Private Auditing Agencies. Hence in order to cultivate and foster the growth of compliance culture, FSSAI is enabling compliance through private recognised Auditing Agencies. A Draft Food Safety and Standards (Food Safety Auditing) Regulations, 2017 (http://www.fssai.gov.in/home/fss-legislation/notifications/draft-notification.html) has been prepared for the same.

Is Palm Oil bad for health?

Standards of Refined Oil are prescribed under Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011. Refined oil complying with the standards is safe to consume.

What offenses and penalties defined by FSSAI in case, a FBO is not complying to the standards?

Details of Offences and Penalties are specified under Section 50 to 64 of the FSS Act, 2006.

What a FBO is required to do if he is already Registered/Licensed under FSSAI?

The FBO who is already Registered/Licensed under FSSAI, is not required to re-register or take a separate licence under FSSAI. He is required to get his existing Registration or License modified.

Whether there are standards for safe plastic packaging for food items?

Yes, Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labelling) Regulations, prescribes requirements for appliances or receptacles for packing or storing whether partly or wholly, food articles including requirements for containers made of plastic materials which should conform to the Indian Standards Specification.

NMQS

A National Milk Quality Survey is being carried out across India covering all the States and Union territories in the country for assessing the quality of milk available to the consumers with focus on unsafe/adulterated milk. The milk samples are being tested for the Fat and SNF content and presence of 14 most common adulterants under a common SOP. More than 130 cities will be covered across 35 States/UTstaking approx.1700 samples. The survey is being carried out under the guidance of a State Level Steering Committee.

Implementation of Central Sector Scheme (CSE) - Status

To upgrade Food Testing Laboratories in India, the authority has announced a major scheme for strengthening of Food Testing Infrastructure in the country at an estimated cost of Rs. 482-crore, in the light of the recent observations by Hon’ble High Court, Mumbai. The scheme focuses on all aspects of food testing system including strengthening of state food labs and referral labs, capacity building of food analysts and other technical personnel engaged in the analysis of food (both within and outside the Government) and creation of mobile food labs across all States/UTs.
